Gym

 Gym workout

Since the soccer season has ended I've recently been going to the gym to lift weights. It has been very beneficial for me because coming into college I didn't know how physical college soccer would be compared to high school soccer. I used to go to the gym a lot during high school and after going for a while I really saw improvement in my physique but really in my speed, I was becoming a lot faster and quicker off my feet. The reason I was focusing more on my speed was that High school soccer was more about speed and not physicality and I thought college soccer would be the same. But I was totally wrong and I saw myself really struggling in that a lot. So I brought it upon myself to really start gaining more muscle in my body so I wasn't getting pushed off the ball as easily and was standing my ground.

I've been focusing more on my lower body because It'll definitely help better with me standing my ground having a lot better balance and not getting knocked off as easily.  What I've been doing for that is a lot of squatting to help with my quads and I've also been doing a lot of explosive work to still keep that speed and not lose it. The reason I still do explosive work is that when you're gaining muscle you tend to be a lot stiffer around your legs hindering your speed. It's also very important for soccer players to work their legs as well because obviously they are playing with their feet and their legs are being the most used. I also love to do hamstring curls because that really helps your speed and that helped me the most with becoming a lot faster.

I focus more on my legs during the week but I split it to where I do 4 days of legs and then three days of upper body. I love to sprinkle in ab workouts with my leg days because it is very important for soccer players to have a good core. I've talked to numerous soccer players and they say ab works have really helped them with staying in shape and their balance. With my upper body I don't tend to do that much heavy weight I focus more on high reps and quicker pace. The reason that I don't really like lifting heavy weights is that for me at least I tend to feel a lot slower and definitely for soccer that is not good and being a winger you want to be quick off your feet and shifty. I feel as if I am lifting heavy weights I'm slower and a lot more stiff which ultimately is bad for me.
